I would say that a talented child with a good teacher and the ability to focus during practice needs one thousand hours to have a solid basic technique. That is an hour a day for three years. For younger children, that might need to be forty minutes for five years. A further two thousand hours and you can think about performing real works in public, be that mozart sonatas, easier pieces of Bach, easier movements of concertos, even party pieces of Kreisler. By performing, I mean with aplomb, confidence, the relaxed certainty that your technique is robust, your practice diligent. I do not mean terrifying yourself to please parents. That is another four years of just over an hour and a half a day. You only do that if you enjoy it and realise you have a talent. Ninety minutes a day aged eleven or twelve is tough. From fourteen to eighteen, if you are serious, you may ramp up from ninety minutes to four hours a day, if becoming a professional is your aim. That would be another four thousand hours odd. By this time, you would have learned several of the major concertos, be playing chamber music of mozart, beethoven, schubert,schumann, mendelssohn, dvorak and many others. I would say that a talented child with a good teacher and the ability to focus during practice needs one thousand hours to have a solid basic technique. That is an hour a day for three years. For younger children, that might need to be forty minutes for five years. A further two thousand hours and you can think about performing real works in public, be that mozart sonatas, easier pieces of Bach, easier movements of concertos, even party pieces of Kreisler. By performing, I mean with aplomb, confidence, the relaxed certainty that your technique is robust, your practice diligent. I do not mean terrifying yourself to please parents. That is another four years of just over an hour and a half a day. You only do that if you enjoy it and realise you have a talent. Ninety minutes a day aged eleven or twelve is tough. From fourteen to eighteen, if you are serious, you may ramp up from ninety minutes to four hours a day, if becoming a professional is your aim. That would be another four thousand hours odd. As you should be able to see if you look closely, the fingers on the cello are much farther apart than the fingers on the violin. Why? Since the cello is larger that the violin, the notes on a cello are farther apart than those on a violin. Which is the number one reason a cello is easier. Now, before I get much farther, let me define “easier.” To me, I’m not worried yet about which requires more physical effort, or which requires more logistics or money. As I’m sure others will/have point(ed) out, violins are cheaper, easier to carry around. This is nice. I have definitely had moments carrying my cello around where I think to myself how nice it would be to have a smaller instrument. But that’s not what this question is about. This is about which is easier to play. Now, why is it important that the notes are farther apart on a cello? Wouldn’t that make it harder, because you have to shift farther, and stretch out more. Yes, but that’s not the whole story. Here’s the deal. As probably any violinist, (or violinist’s parents) can tell you, when you start learning the violin, it doesn’t sound very pretty. When you start learning the cello, it doesn’t sound pretty either, but it sounds nicer a lot sooner that a violin. Some people will probably disagree with me on this, but believe me, I’m not making this up. I’ve been around enough learning violinists to make this statement with complete confidence. Cello’s sound bad too, sometimes, but not quite as much. Am I just being biased, or is there a scientific, logical reason to support my claim? Look at those pictures again. See how much farther apart those fingers are on the cello that on the violin? Let’s say there’s each whole step on a cello is about an inch. That means that where you put your fingers to play each note is about an inch apart, depending on the note (and the key, and other stuff…) On the violin, it’s maybe half that. We’ll say it’s something like 1/2 an inch per whole step. Now let’s say I’m just learning how to play the cello. I wan’t to play the note A. For the first couple of months, lets say I don’t get it spot on. That’s pretty normal. It takes a lot of practice to build up muscle memory to where you can get your finger right on the note every time. So let’s say, when I’m just learning how to play the cello, my fingers are a 1/16th of an inch off. On a cello, that’s only 1/16th of a step too low. That’s noticeably flat, but not super terrible. It’s still the same note, give or take. If you’re playing with a lot of other people, you might even get away with sounding alright. However, if you’re learning on a violin, and you’re 1/16th of an inch off A, your going to be 1/4 of a step low. That’s right in between A and G#, which is excruciatingly obvious to pretty much anyone with ears. By the end, I could play many of the great concertos but still had ways to go if I wanted to make a decent living playing. You need to master bowing the way a writer masters language. You must create gentle sweetness, like stroking a cat to make it purr. You must create the crisp biting aura akin to a hammer hitting a nail. You must create bouncy joviality akin to effortless swishing of a tennis racquet. You must create pleasingly loud sounds without forcing, disappearing whispers without shuddering. And you must combine them all into combinations to produce musical Shakespeare. Mastering the left hand is a bit like being a bricklayer. It is all terribly regular but unbelievably precise. And it must be done at high speed, incredibly high speed sometimes. My professor gave me fingergymnastik exercises akin to a ballerina or a gymnast. Flexibility, strength and touch are all essential in your fingers, both left hand and right hand. You need them all to play the Beethoven violin concerto. I would say that a talented child with a good teacher and the ability to focus during practice needs one thousand hours to have a solid basic technique. That is an hour a day for three years. For younger children, that might need to be forty minutes for five years. the fingers. As you should be able to see if you look closely, the fingers on the cello are much farther apart than the fingers on the violin. Why? Since the cello is larger that the violin, the notes on a cello are farther apart than those on a violin. Which is the number one reason a cello is easier. Now, before I get much farther, let me define “easier.” To me, I’m not worried yet about which requires more physical effort, or which requires more logistics or money. As I’m sure others will/have point(ed) out, violins are cheaper, easier to carry around. This is nice. I have definitely had moments carrying my cello around where I think to myself how nice it would be to have a smaller instrument. But that’s not what this question is about. This is about which is easier to play. Now, why is it important that the notes are farther apart on a cello? Wouldn’t that make it harder, because you have to shift farther, and stretch out more. Yes, but that’s not the whole story. Here’s the deal. As probably any violinist, (or violinist’s parents) can tell you, when you start learning the violin, it doesn’t sound very pretty. When you start learning the cello, it doesn’t sound pretty either, but it sounds nicer a lot sooner that a violin. Some people will probably disagree with me on this, but believe me, I’m not making this up. I’ve been around enough learning violinists to make this statement with complete confidence. Cello’s sound bad too, sometimes, but not quite as much. Am I just being biased, or is there a scientific, logical reason to support my claim? Look at those pictures again. See how much farther apart those fingers are on the cello that on the violin? Let’s say there’s each whole step on a cello is about an inch. That means that where you put your fingers to play each note is about an inch apart, depending on the note (and the key, and other stuff…) On the violin, it’s maybe half that. We’ll say it’s something like 1/2 an inch per whole step. Now let’s say I’m just learning how to play the cello. I wan’t to play the note A. For the first couple of months, lets say I don’t get it spot on. That’s pretty normal. It takes a lot of practice to build up muscle memory to where you can get your finger right on the note every time. So let’s say, when I’m just learning how to play the cello, my fingers are a 1/16th of an inch off. On a cello, that’s only 1/16th of a step too low. That’s noticeably flat, but not super terrible. It’s still the same note, give or take. If you’re playing with a lot of other people, you might even get away with sounding alright. However, if you’re learning on a violin, and you’re 1/16th of an inch off A, your going to be 1/4 of a step low.
